The Cellars-Hohenort is a beautiful country house in Constantia that is member of the prestigious marketing organization, Relais&Chateaux.
I arrived in the afternoon where the general manager welcomed me before I was escorted to the room.
I stayed in a Premier Suite which was approxemately 70 square metres and recently renovated. The Cellars-Hohenort has 52 rooms total and 7 of those are Premier Suites. It had a comfortable bed, free-standing bathtub, large separate sitting area and lots of welcome amenities.
The Cellars-Hohenort is famous for it’s food and has two great restaurants. The more exclusive, The Greenhouse has been voted the best restaurant in South Africa by Eat Out. It’s always sold out far in advance so instead I had dinner in The Conservatory which was a great experience. I just didn’t like their smoking policy where smoking is allowed in the outside public areas. The smoke went into the restaurant and was very uncomfortable. They are planning to change their policy soon like some of the other hotels in South Africa. The winelist were very impressive and many of the wines is produced in Constantia itself.
The facilities included a spa called D&D spa, three swimming pools and the beautiful gardens. I liked the typical old school Relais&Chateaux style of the place, but still with it’s own unique character.
The service level was great, but not outstanding. Some staff was excellent, while others could need more training. They have many staffs working for them as they area a 52 room hotel so you don’t feel as intimate as most Relais&Chateaux, but definitely managed top professional by the Liz McGrath Collection which portfolio includes another two Relais&Chateaux
As I wrote in the beginning it has a convenient location to Cape Town and is something people forget when discussing the best hotel in Cape Town. Only 20 minutes by car and definitely a shame not to consider The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel as your Cape Town hotel.
Overall a great Relais&Chateaux with high food and service standards. A beautiful property that definitely deserves to be mentioned among the better hotels in Africa and also keep the convenient location to Cape Town in mind.
My opinion: Great+ experience.
