Reid’s Palace by Orient-Express

Orient-Express is always a good choice everywhere in the world and a similar to Relais&Chateaux as it offers a different local experience in all locations. The main difference is that Orient-Express is a chain with quite bigger hotels and Relais&Chateaux is a marketing organization with smaller hotels.

After a great experience in Madeiras Relais&Chateaux hotel I was excited to see the level of Reid’s Palace. Casa Velha do Palheiro’s city shuttle took me all the way to the hotel where I received a warm welcome by name before being escorted to the room.

I stayed in a junior suite and it had a very beautiful renovated design. The shower was separate from the bath tub and it was a very comfortable place to rest. The best thing was the beautiful Funchal view from the balcony which you can see in the photos below.

Orient-Express always have high service levels, but I often don’t like the size of the hotels. Mount Nelson Hotel was an exception however and is definitely one of the world’s best city hotels. Reid’s Palace is located within Funchal and had more of a city feeling to it than a resort. The service was like that. Professional and fast and it must again have something to do with the size and 163 rooms.

The facilities included a nice spa and overall Reid’s Palace must be considered the best hotel in the island of Madeira. It was a great Orient-Express experience to the portfolio. It’s not one of Orient-Express best properties, but it’s a hotel with a lot of history, it’s own character and with great service.

My opinion: Great experience.
