Fateh Garh

Fateh Garh was recognised by Condé Nast Travellers Hot List in 2009, and that was my main reason for trying it as a different hotel experience in Udaipur. I arrived in a taxi from Taj Lake Palace and had a nice check in.

I stayed in their highest category of suites, and it was a very beautiful suite. Very simple design, but with massage table and jacuzzi in the bathroom. The views of Udaipur was amazing and must be one of the best I’ve had. The bed should be replaced, though, it was too hard and not comfortable to sleep in. Fateh Garh wants to be different from any other hotel, and it’s perhaps the most local experience I’ve had.

All the staff is from Rajasthan and 95% of the food is with local ingredients. I like very local experiences, but the most important thing in a hotel is always the service, and there is a lot of training to do. A few staff is top professional, but a lot of the staff have a very poor level of English where you are not able to communicate with them. That is unacceptable to the majority of the guest is foreigners. If they get that right, it could become great. Their facilities is very nice. I had a nice spa treatment, and their swimming pool was excellent. It’s been voted one of the world’s six best swimming pools by Condé Nast Traveller, and it’s well deserved.

Overall a special local experience in a beautiful hotel, but the service must be improved to become one of the world’s very best.

My opinion: Great experience.
