Cliff House Hotel joined Relais&Chateaux last year after being a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World the first year of their operation. My experience started with a pick up at the nearest bus stop 20 kilometres away. The welcome went very quick, and the general manager Adriaan Bartels greeted me. He also escorted me to the room which was very unconventional for a Relais&Chateaux. Very modern design as seen through the hotel. The bathroom is the highlight with raining shower and freestanding bathtub. The large flatscreen Tv, comfortable bed and sea view were other nice touches as well as a handwritten welcome card.
Regarding design Cliff House Hotel felt more like an SLH-property than a Relais&Chateaux that tend to be quite an old school. Although the design didn’t feel like most Relais&Chateaux’s, it definitely had the charm which is one of the 5 C’s of the organisation. Their Michelin-starred restaurant was closed on the night I stayed, so I had dinner in their casual restaurant. It was good, but obviously not a Michelin experience. The facilities included a nice spa with a large swimming pool. The service was friendly by the professional staff. To sum up, it’s a beautiful hotel, set in a stunning location. I would like to return in the future and try their Michelin restaurant to have a proper opinion about how good this property is. Afterall, the food is usually the main reason to stay at a Relais & Châteaux property.
