131 Herbert Baker is a smaller city hotel with the highest rates in Pretoria. This 8 rooms is only 30 minutes from Johannesburg Airport and a perfect place for a stopover instead of business oriented Sandton. I arrived in Pretoria Station where the hotel picked me up. After a short drive I arrived in he hotel and received a warm welcome. I was offered a drink and soon after escorted to the room.

I stayed in Luxury Room which are the standard category. Beautiful appointed with private balcony and only a few steps from the lobby. It was perhaps a bit too small and basic for the most discerning travelers, but not a problem for me as it’s a very intimate hotel.

The food exceeded my expectations. The steak was good, but the lasagne was one of the best I’ve had. Well done and very reasonable prices for great ingredients. The only thing I didn’t like was their smoking policy with smoking allowed in outside public areas. Unacceptable to allow smoking at the swimming pool and so close to the rooms and lobby.

The service level was great. Very friendly staff with a good attitude. However, to improve the service I suggest more staff, especially at the front desk. I know there’s only 8 rooms, but one receptionist isn’t enough if they want to offer an even better guest experience in the future. Overall a great hotel and happy that Pretoria has this level. Highly recommended as the best choice for a stopover, but keep in mind the rates are quite high.
